They eat like humans, sleep like humans, and, for the most part, feel like humans. But they are not human. They belong to an ancient race which evolved alongside ours, since the earliest existence of humans.
They live among us, but we don't know who they are. They live beyond human boundaries... their id has been set free. They are what we fear in ourselves...
They have vastly increased longevity -- able to live for hundreds of years, and in rare cases, thousands -- by virtue of a retarded aging process, as well as their bodies' ability to spontaneously heal almost any injury that does not dismember or disintegrate them (i.e., a chainsaw or a consuming fire).
Also, Kindred must periodically drink small amounts of human blood to maintain their existence and their "powers" -- as well as to be protected from the sun, which can, if they haven't recently fed, ignite them into flame.
Kindred pass legally as human with the help of fellow Kindred working inside various agencies responsible for the creation and authentication of documents -- birth, death and marriage records, etc. However, even these ties sometimes don't suffice -- for instance, when a Kindred has lived too long in a community for his lack of aging to escape notice. In these cases Kindred may migrate to new cities to establish new identities. For this reason we can expect to see local Kindred leave, or out-of-town Kindred arrive in San Francisco.
Each CLAN has a local leader called a "Primogen". An ancient enmity simmers at all times between the Brujah and the Gangrels, similar to ancient human enmities.
Because Kindred have enhanced senses of hearing, sight and smell, Gangrels and Brujah can detect each other instantly, and their hatred overwhelms all else, existing on a chemical, blood level.
Although the Prince is typically a Ventrue, leaders of all the Clans covet the position, and conspire constantly to seize it.
The peace between the Clans is always tenuous, and it is only through the skill and strength of the Princethat peace is kept. This peace is all-important, because without it the Masquerade is doomed.
Killing Kindred is of course forbidden, but punishment is more variable, since Kindred are often ordered killed by the Prince in order to protect the Masquerade. When such sanctioned "Final Death" is ordained, it is called a "Blood Hunt", and can only be decreed by the Prince, typically after a "Conclave" is held among the Leaders (Julian, Cash, Daedalus,Eddie, and Lillie) of all the Clans.
Clans:
Torreadors (artists) are lead by Lillie.
Ventrue (blue bloods) led by Julian.
Nosferatu (subterranean and savage) This is the oldest clan, controlled by Daedalus.
Gangrels (bikers and rockers) led by Cash.
Brujah (mobsters) led by Eddie.
