Sex Magic

Devil worship!   Nudity!   Wild orgies!

This is what sex magic is not about. Some present-day witches do believe in the old idea of ritual nudity (being 'skyclad'), and most witches understand and recognise the potent force of orgasm. However, the reality of sex magic has nothing in common with embellished and hysterical tabloid newspaper and magazine articles that occasionally surface about sex-crazed, satanic people who have a penchant for bedknobs and broomsticks.

Being nude when performing rituals does make sense. Nudity can encourage feelings of freedom and beauty, and people are more equal in the nude when their social differences have been stripped away, so to speak. Generally, however, covens don't insist upon it. Not all witches live in warmer climates, so to insist on such a thing would not even be practical.

Sex is the most natural way of generating power. Sex magic is the art of using the orgasm, or the whole sexual act, for magical purposes. Orgasms can deliver a shock of high voltage to the etheric body and, if you know how to utilise the pwer generated, the impact of the charge can be quite potent. We are dealing with a life force here, and bodily symbolism is one of the deepest religious tools we have.

A Brief History

Witchcraft is concerned with the forces of fertility. This is acknowledged through the practices of both moon worship (the moon's 'feminine' nature is intimately connected with fertility, both of the earth and ourselves) and sun worship, which is also the worship of life. Without sunlight, all things on earth would wither and die, and without moisture, nothing could grow. The sun is the father of fire, the moon is the mother of water. The link between the two is air; the earth is the sphere of their manifestation. Life, nature and fertility therefore depend on the universal interplay of positive and negative forces. This is the belief behind the sex rites of ancient fertility cults.

Modern witches, if they do perform such rituals, do so in this spirit - not because they want to indulge in orgies. But is there a need for such rites in our modern world?

For many people, yes. A new concept of fertility is is evloving, one which incorpporates the mind and body. Witchcraft is a fertility cult, which means it is life affirming, not life repressing. Magic doesnt work through the intellect but through our fundamental instihncts and emotions. Sex is one of the most instinctual and fundamental things and consequently one of the most potemtly magical events when understood.

Sex has its own mysticism and mythology. A great deal of this can be found in the Bible. It is claimed that the Book of Genesis, far from being a legend about the creation of the world, contains a profound symbolism which, if properly understood, would uncover the great mystery of existence itself. It has fostered immense research and studies. This is believed to have begun in the Hebrew Talmud, a weighty study of the Old Testament, and contiuned in part in the Kabbalah, a theosophy developed by the Jews of the Middle Ages.

One medieval school of Jewish kabbalaists taught that all creation is upheld by sexual activity. Sex has a lot to answer for - it has inspired some extraordinary beliefs. At one end of the spectrum we are told that sex is a source of spiritual danger and corruption, but at the other extreme there are those who use sex as a means for experiencing a high mystical experience and gaining an awareness of the hidden truths of the universe.

The legends of many countries are filled with allusions to sex. Phallic symbols, sacred prostitution, fertility rites and marriage customs all abound. And there is no limit to sexual symbolism in nature: hills, fertile valleys, gushing waterfalls, fish in the sea. In some cultures seasonal tasks such as ploughing, sowing, reaping and harvesting are often associated with sex ans magic.

The technique of stretching one's self-control to near breaking point in order to heighten sexual power was known to a number of communities with a sophisticted sex-magical tradition. The Tantriks of India have a form of private worship in which such power is built up. The rite, preceded by a period of celibacy, is accompanied by the drinking of aphrodisiacs, and may last for hours or even days. The practitioner raises the sexual energy, enormously empowered by restraint, from the physical to the psychic plane, in order to experience a state of spiritual enlightenment.

Sex Magic : How to use it

Modern-day covens perform fertility rites to give thanks for the past year or to encourage spiritual and personal gain for the new year.

Sex magic is more specific and is used for praticular work rather than general work. A powerful thought fired by the imagination is one of the secret weapons of the magician. The technique of testing your self-control by holding off your climax for as long as possible will heighten the power of your spell and/or ritual.

The forces generated during the sexual act are said to be of the same order as the religious; both create powerful repercussions in the spiritual world. During ordinary intercourse the energy created is normally dissipated, but it can be channelled and transmitted.

Bodily cleanliness is important for magic, and doubly so for sex magic. Bathe before you begin your work, and use essential oils in your bath if you wish. Before beginning, prepare your location: burn incense, anoint yourself with oils, light candles. In short, take advantage of anything that will help you consentrate and aid your desired result.

Visualisation is the key to the occult. Begin with a short meditation on what it is that you are trying to achieve. If you are with a partner, face him or her (the position of one's limbs during the creative act automatically sets in motion the psycho-spiritual stream). Rock together and try to come together, or as close together as possible. Mutual masturbation is just as effective, as is masturbation by the solitary witch.

Sex is a means to an end in sex magic. Orgasm is the important factor. How you get there - whether you're heterosexual or homosexual, or you would prefer to masturbate - is irrelevant. The point is, the longer you can hold off climax, the more power you can generate.

This is only one of many ways to work magic. You dont have to use it and you dont have to be involved in a coven situation - but you must always feel comfortable with what you are doing.
