Sidney's Journal

Kansas

18 May, 1997 / 2pm: When Dr. Sebastien Randall approached me about joining the Legacy, I was a bit skeptical. When he offered to fix my little law enforcement problem by calling the work 'community service', I was slightly awed. I hadn't realized exactly how much pull the Luna Foundation actually had. For a 'philanthropic organization' they are pretty connected. Now I know why. So here I am. This is my first actual case and I'm not quite sure how I should begin. Do I interact with the others, or am I supposed lock myself in the computer manifold? And who do I approach with these questions? Go directly to the 'big man' himself? Maybe Father Talib. I haven't even met the others yet. Apparently, Dr. O'Neil is on assignment somewhere and won't be back for at least a week or two. I'm supposed to meet the others tonight.

From what Dr. Randall has told me so far, this case has all the makings of a disaster waiting to happen. And, it deals with bugs. Locusts, to be exact, like in the bible. The only bugs I want to deal with lurk around on hard drives and mainframes.

20 May, 1997 / 9pm: I really shouldn't have worried. Every one here has been very friendly and supportive. Ravyn said that everyone here has some kind of skeleton hiding. And, I found out, I don't have to deal with the bugs directly. I'm in the search and recover department. Ravyn will be dealing with the gushy little things. I'll start with the Kansas City archives and see if there have been anything else of this type. Bastien said to check the Legacy archives as well - maybe they...uh, we've dealt with something like this before. It's amasing how those little bugs can do such major damage. It almost blows the mind.

21 May, 1997 / 11pm: My eyes are fried, but I found something, I think. Back in 1847 there was a large plague of locusts that caused the deaths of two people and wiped out the agriculture in the area for almost three years. I'm excited. Tomorrow I'll see if I can find out anymore about it. The Legacy computer system is linked globally into everything. I've never seen a system so complete. If I was still hacking, gosh, what I could do with all this.

23 May, 1997 / 8pm: I cross-referenced the archive information I found with the text-based indexes I found in storage. The Phoenix is the most incredible thing I've ever seen. How do you get lost in a jet? Anyway, I've contacted the Topeka House, although why they NEED a House in Topeka is beyond me, they are faxing me a copy of the excerpt from one of the journals of the time. Apparently, the Legacy was involved in the locust mess the first time around.

16 July, 1998 / 8pm: Bryn asked me to do some checking on similar murders to the ones we've been asked to look in to. Okay, to say I got a little more than I bargained for would be an understatement. There have been a string of similar murders all over the country dating back to the 1950s. Most places haven't bother to input the information back further than that, but I'm sure it goes back further. Setting a few perameters and excluding all single events, the picture is pretty scary.

17 July, 1998 / 11pm: Got side-tracked yesterday by a thought. What I was about to report was an alarming pattern of deaths by sledgehammer. Sounds like a bad slasher movie. There seems to be a concentration of victims in certain cities at certain times. The body count is always around three, and all but two suspects were caught pretty easily. Odd coincidence? Doubt it.

19 July, 1998 / 4am: There was a time when I was normally up this late chatting or whatever. These Legacy people have corrupted my natural nocturnal bio-rhythems. I'm pooped, but if I don't get this on paper, I may forget by tomorrow.

I was chatting with some ppl on the wild west mystery channel. Computer nuts tend to do lots of research on the things they're interested in. I got a possible hit. Apparently, there was a family in Kansas in the 1870s. They crushed their victim's skulls and robbed them of their property. The family's name was Bender. I'll check the Legacy database after I get some sleep.

19 July, 1998 / 9pm: It should stop coming as a surprise to me that the Legacy is somehow involved in everything that occurs on the planet. It seems there was a Legacy lawyer, no less, who took a confession from a dying man in 1909. His name was Edward Davis and the confessor's name was George Downer. The confession and description so traumatized the good lawyer that he spent the rest of his life tracking down and recording everything he could find on the case. Lucky for us. He had a few theories, but he died a long time before 'the curse' travelled on and proved him right.
