I had a good week researching as I went to Henrietta, Texas and found proof that William H. Veal is buried there. At the Hope Cemetery in Henrietta, I found in an original Cemetery Registry Book for 1866-1982 the following:

Wm. H. Veal, place of birth, Millage, Georgia, date of death January 10, 1902, date of burial January 11, 1902 in Henrietta, cause of death, consumption, buried in Block-Old Yard, lot 131. The grave is no longer marked, but two graves in the Lot are still marked and the location agrees with the other cemetery record.

This information differs from some information on the Internet that says he died in 1907 in Beaumont, Texas. Based on the information in Henrietta that is readable handwriting plus a great grand daughter remembering taken to Henrietta to visit the grave there is no doubt in my mind that this is the William H. Veal that I have been searching for. He could have been born in Milledgeville, Georgia as I haven’t found a Millage, Georgia. He had relatives in Baldwin County, Georgia and Milledgeville is the County Seat. He lived in Hancock County, Georgia and Milledgeville is the largest and closest town. Also, the statement that he died in Henrietta and the cause of death shows he did not die in Beaumont, Texas. I am checking with the Courthouse to see if a Death Certificate is filed. I do know that his death was registered with the State of Texas so I do not expect to find a death certificate.

I am also trying to find out why he was in Henrietta. Not far from his grave are several graves from a Taylor Family. His daughter, Blanche, had come to Texas to marry a Winston G. “Wint” Taylor. John Smedley was born October 16, 1770 in Greene County, Georgia. He was the first child of Thomas Smedley (b. September 10, 1767) and Naomi Melton (b. December 25, 1786, d. between 1840 & 1850). They were married on January 14, 1790, probable in Edgefield, South Carolina. Thomas Smedley was the son of John S. Smedley (b. circa 1745, d. 1790) wo lived on the Red Bank Creek of the Little Saluda River in the Edgefield District of South Carolina. Naomi was the daughter of Nathan Melton and Nancy Allen who also lived on the Little Saluda River. The above information came from the “Ledger/Diary of Lieutenant William Allen Melton”.

Effie Farr was not the mother of John Smedley’s children. She did not marry John until 1870 when he was 80 years old. John Smedley married Charolette Skinner in Putnam County, Georgia on February 26, 1818. She was the daughter of Phebias Skinner of first Wilkes then Putnam County, Georgia. John & Charolette lived in Putnam, Coweta, and Troup Counties of Georgia before settling in Chambers City, Alabama. He move there in the early 1830’s. Rebecca’s obituary can be found in the Sandersville Herald, dated May 17, 1833. He and Rebecca can be found on the 1850 Washington County, Georgia Census. His age 22 and hers 21 with a daughter Marjian aged 1. In 1860 he and Rebecca are on page 285, Head of Household #953, Family 933. He is 33, Rebecca is 28 and they have five children. In 1870 he and Rebecca are shown on page 2, GMD100, Head of Household 16, Family 15. He is shown as John “B” and is 44 years old, Rebecca is 38 and they have eight children. In 1880 John & Rebecca are on page 1, GMF99, Head of Household 9. He is just plain John and is 54 years old, Rebecca is 53. They have three daughters aged 12-17 years old and a 10 year old son “Hartwell”. In 1900 he is John H. Veal and his 2^nd wife, Sarah J. is shown on GMD 100, Head of Household 156. He is 76 and his birth- year is 1824, Sarah J. is 52 and her birth month and year are September 1847. With them is daughter Sarah “Sallie” aged 33 and grand daughter Nonie aged 13.

In about 1858, Asa L. W. moved from Georgia to Texas. Three years later, in October 1861, at the age of 20 years, he entered the Confederate Army as a Private in the Eutaw Blues. Limestone County, Texas. The Eutaw Blues were mustered into service at Camp Beauregard, Ellis County, Texas. 71 men enlisted into the Confederate Army on September 07, 1861 at Eutaw, Limestone County, Texas. Asa actually enlisted at Hempstead, Austin County, Texas according to his discharge papers. The original Eutaw Blues was organized and became part of Captain James P. Brown’s Company of the 12^th Cavalry with 156 men. At the wars end. Only 87 men remained (source: Gusher notes). Asa was discharged March 11, 1862 for hydratocle (source: discharge Papers belonging to Houston Veal). In 1870 he was listed on the Navarro County, Texas census as aged 29, born in Georgia. His wife aged 22 and their four year old female and a two year old male in the household. Asa was listed in 1902 as an active member of the Ben McCulloch, Camp #30 of the United Veterans of America in Decatur, Texas. On his discharge papers, Asa was described as 5’ 6”, tall, dark-complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. Occupation: Farmer
