Did Duchovny Spill X-Files Baby News?

After the season ender of The X-Files, the burning question isn't whether Mulder's coming back from his alien abduction. The real question is who fathered Scully's bun in the oven? Yep, the Requiem finale dropped the bombshell that Scully (Gillian Anderson) is pregnant — and it could be anyone from her usually-keeps-his-distance partner Mulder to some wayward alien.

So, did David Duchovny, who had to be lured back to the show for an eighth season, spill the baby beans on an Italian radio show?

According to an online X-Files newsgroup, which translated the Italian interview, Duchovny said that, yep, Mulder's the daddy.

"I don't want to give too much away too soon, otherwise I would spoil you all," the TV hunk is quoted as saying. "Then again, I didn't write this episode, so I really don't know. Anyway, they told me that, yes, it should be Mulder's baby, a little Mulder, and the baby is not alien — that is, if you don't believe that Mulder is alien himself!"

Ah, more conspiracies. In a May 26 interview with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Chris Carter acknowledged that Mulder might be the father, cryptically saying, "There was a [recent] episode written and directed by Gillian that began and ended in Mulder's bedroom. That would certainly bring up some questions for me."

In the Italian interview, Duchovny also reportedly makes mention of a plot development we remember from the '80s sci-fi series V: that the baby, if it were part alien, would grow to adulthood with lightning speed. "Maybe they were hoping to have my child growing up really fast to take my place in the show," he is supposed to have said.

When asked to confirm whether Duchovny unzipped his lips abroad, the actor's reps could neither confirm, nor deny. However, they said it was "extremely unlikely" that the business-savvy actor would sabotage his just-agreed-to upcoming season that way.

"Perhaps he was joking," said one of his reps, citing the dry-witted actor's fondness for teasing.

Another rumor that could not be confirmed: that Duchovny will be returning for fewer than the announced 11 episodes next season (out of 22 total episodes).

Duchovny is on vacation and couldn't be reached personally for comment.

Work on the eighth season of The X-Files begins at the end of July.
