Scully and Mulder Sex Flashback?

The X-Files is entering its eighth season with a new mission: to embrace, not fight, the future. With mainstay David Duchovny appearing in only 11 out of 20 episodes, new blood is coming in the form of a new partner for Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and  Mulder Jr.?

Speaking Thursday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif., series creator Chris Carter shed light on the mystery of last season's finale — namely, who knocked up Scully?

We now learn that that New Year's Eve kiss she and Mulder shared (which occurred in an episode that aired Nov. 28) might have been a prelude to some off-screen action.

"It makes it a lot more fun to now go back and find out what really happened," Carter said, musing on the possibility of an amorous flashback. "If anyone feels cheated [by the chaste on-screen kiss], they will get their prurient interests satisfied."

Mulder's disappearance is courtesy of alien abductors — coincidentally the same plot device used in the second season to accommodate Gillian Anderson's real-life pregnancy.

As for the other new X-Files addition: Robert Patrick's character will be the blue-collar, ex-NYPD, ex-USMC "man's man" FBI agent John Doggett, who'll provide a full-time foil for Scully. (Bonus trivia: Doggett and Scully are both named after Dodgers play-by-play announcers.)
