(CNN) -- The evolution of life on earth took billions of years. The making of "Evolution," the new movie from Ivan Reitman, didn't take quite as long -- more like several months -- but had its own challenges, according to Reitman and members of the cast.
"(Comedy) is ridiculously hard," says Julianne Moore, who co-stars in the movie with David Duchovny and Orlando Jones. "And if the rhythm is not right, if the music or the line is not right, it's not funny."
The movie supposes what would happen if a meteor carrying microscopic alien life forms crashed onto Earth. In the film, the life forms quickly evolve, threatening the planet. The movie has the same brand of humor as Reitman's mega-hit "Ghostbusters" (1984).
Duchovny compares the work to that of his other famous alien hunter, Fox Mulder of "The X-Files," but adds that the roles are very different.

"It's less of the small work I do on 'The X-Files' ... that's the creative challenge, and it's painful, because it's not what I do naturally," he says.
Duchovny says one of the biggest challenges he faced in this production was wearing special "containment suits" that were "so uncomfortable," and also the wrong color.
"I asked for blue suits because I have light eyes," says Duchovny. "Ivan made me wear red."
Never mind the suits. Reitman says he has -- pardon the pun -- evolved since his days of making "Ghostbusters," a movie about a group of men who fend off bad guys from the spirit world. This movie, he says, is different.
"The science, as far as we know it, is more realistic in this," he says. "As opposed to the science of ghostology, which is slightly less known."
But however realistic the science is, what audiences will want is the comedy. If that works, then audiences will naturally select "Evolution."
