Anderson Nixes Another Year of X-Files

With his contract up, we know Mulder's on his way out after the upcoming season of The X-Files. David Duchovny's been most vocal about his frustration with the show, and then there's his profit-sharing suit against Fox, which can't make for a happy negotiation environment should he change his mind and re-up.

Curiously, Gillian Anderson was signed to an extra year, prompting speculation that the show would continue in some form, with either a solo Scully or a new hunky FBI partner for the titian-haired agent.

Now Anderson says she, too, is tired of the strain of investigating the paranormal.

Talking to Access Hollywood, she nixes the idea of another year, saying, "I think it would be a mistake to draw it out. You want to go out with a modicum of respect."

Anderson says, "Physically, psychologically, I don't think I could do another season. I'm just spent."

We know how she feels. After six years of governmental runaround, gooky autopsies, and skeptical eye-rolling at her out-there partner, we imagine she needs a nice vacation. Her character's survived an alien abduction, having her ovaries stolen, finding and losing a daughter, losing a father and a sister, and a bout of cancer — you know, the usual FBI job woes.

Off-screen, Anderson's had to battle for pay more equal to better-established star Duchovny and endure endless questions about whether the two were also bestest buds in real life. Answer: No.

Playing Scully netted her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and two SAG awards, not to mention inspiring dozens of Web sites dedicated to the Skeptical One.

Like Duchovny, Anderson's concentrating on her film career. She'll be seen next with Eric Stoltz in a Showtime production of The House of Mirth, a turn-of-the-century tragic love story based on the Edith Wharton novel. She'll also be heard giving her voice to the English-language version of Princess Mononoke, out this fall.

With Chris Carter busy with his new series Harsh Realm and Duchovny and Anderson trying to distance themselves from the show that made them famous, fans will have to wait to see whether The X-Files franchise continues in films or not at all.

The seventh season of The X-Files premieres Oct. 31.
