Ingredients:
1 cup baking soda
4 Tbsp. citric acid
1/2 cup sweet almond oil or grape seed oil or olive oil
Equipment:
Clean ice cream pail with lid
Large mixing spoon
Molds
Instructions:
Combine dry ingredients into a bowl. Stir until well blended. Add bath oil and fragrance oil. Stir until well mixed and there are no lumps.
Place a teaspoonful in your and hand and shape by rolling it into a ball. Place on waxed paper and let sit for several days to cure. Or you can press the mixture into a mold. Be sure to pack it well. Gently tap it out of the mold onto a surface covered with waxed paper. Let sit for several days to cure.
Store in a closed container to protect from moisture.
Tips/Suggestions:
Do not place bath bombs directly on cardboard or wood as the oils will seep out of the bomb and into this type of curing surface.
You can add dried flower petals to your mixture before molding or shaping.
You can add the contents of a vitamin E capsule to your bombs. Be sure to exchange equal amounts from your main bath oil.
Sea salt can be added to your bomb. Be sure to run it through a blender to obtain the consistency similar to that of table salt. Add more bath oil as necessary.
Sweet almond, grape seed and olive oils all have shelf lives. Try not to make more bath bombs than you know will be used within two to three months.
Bombs can be used as air fresheners prior to use in the bath. Just set them out unwrapped. As the fragrance dissipates, then use them in the bath. The warm water will rejuvenate the potency of the fragrance.
For presentation purposes, bombs can be wrapped in small plastic bags with shredded paper or cellophane lining the bottom and tied at the top with a nice piece of ribbon.
Fizzing Bath Oil Balls
Ingredients:
1/4 c. baking soda
2 tlbs. citric acid or absorbic acid (powdered vit. C)
1 tlbs. Borax powder (for softening)
2 tlbs. powdered sugar (for binding)
2 tlbs. sweet almond oil
1 tsp. Vitamin E oil (preservative)
1/4 tsp. fragrance or essential oil
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl and stir until well blended. Drizzle in almond oil and stir until mixture is moistened. Add Vit. E oil and fragrance and stir until well mixed. Take teaspoon size globs of mixture and form into ball shapes with fingers. (mixture will be VERY crumbly and fragile , so do the best you can. Add a little bit more of the vit. E. oil I find that helps.) Place the balls on a sheet of wax paper and leave alone for 2-3 hours. After 2-3 hrs, reshape balls. Let the balls air-dry and harden for 10 days. Store balls in a closed container to protect from moisture. To use, plop a ball into your bathtub in warm water!
Bath Bomb Recipes
Recipe 1 Mix 1 part citric acid (you can get this at a pharmacy) with 2 1/4 parts baking soda. Add several drops of essential oil and a few drops food coloring. Moisten by spraying with water or witch hazel (witch hazel is better since it evaporates much more quickly) until mixture just begins to stick together. Recipe 2 2 T Citric Acid 1 T Cornstarch 1/4 c baking soda 1/4 t fragrance oil 1 - 6 drops of liquid colorant (if desired) 1 T Coconut Oil ( or any other emolient oil like Almond Oil, Avocado Oil, or Apricot Kernel Oil) Place all of the dry ingredients (first 3) into a bowl and mix well. Add fragrance and colorant. In a small glass bowl combine oil then add fragrance and colorant. Slowly add oil mixture to dry ingredients and blend well. Take truffle sized scoops of the mixture and shape into balls. Balls should be about 1" in diameter. Let balls rest on a sheet of waxed paper for 2 - 3 hours. Let the bombs dry and harden for 24 - 48 hours. Pack each bomb into its own candy cup. Store bombs in a closed container. To use drop, 1 -3 into warm bath water.
I hope you have as much fun with these as I do!
